Siddhi Gupta, represented the lab at Istanbul Innovation Days 2025, where she facilitated an interactive workshop on the topic: Rethinking AI: Indigenous Knowledge, Local Models, and Non-Extractive Approaches.

Wakanyi Hoffman was invited to speak at the 77th Council on World Affairs hosted at University of Colorado Boulder.


2024 HIGHLIGHTS

The launch of the lab on October 8 was also the launch of our co-founder Payal’s new book ‘From Pessimism to Promise: Lessons from the Global South on designing Inclusive Tech’ with MIT Press, longlisted for the 2024 Porchlight Business Book Awards.  

Laura and consortium member Paree Zarolia, Senior Staff UX Researcher at Google, have launched the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) Research Consortium, a research exchange forum between industry and academia. 

Our AI ethics lead Marianna Capasso and Payal Arora, won a Network Institute grant to organize a workshop with a team at VU Amsterdam on Synthetic Data for Fairness and Privacy, and will publish their insights next year. 

Payal and our field lead Siddhi Gupta worked closely with consortium member Akshita Goyal and others at the Adobe Equity product team to pilot novel ways to debias datasets with diverse underrepresented groups in India. Here’s a taste from the field.

Women in AI Benelux invited Marianna Capasso to deliver a keynote titled “Algorithms at Work: What’s New?” and nominated Payal Arora for the Women in AI Benelux Awards 2025 in the AI Diversity Leader category.

Payal Arora has been awarded a Google Grant titled ‘Gen(der) AI Safety: Girls’ and Women’s Digital Wellbeing in the Global South’ and will work with consortium member Marta Zarzycka at Google and lab team Kiran Bhatia and Weijie Huang on building a Gen(der) AI Safety Framework.

Wakanyi Hoffman presented at the AI & Government / AI & Overheid Conference, engaging with leaders from the Dutch government and business community on Ubuntu AI ethics for community-centered sustainability.
